A REGIÃO

Alegrete

Alegrete is a beautiful and imposing village in the municipality of Arronches, located in the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park at an altitude of 475m. Its castle dates back to the foundation of Portugal and was conquered from the Arabs by D. Afonso Henriques in 1160. The Castle is the Ex Libris of this village, to which D. Dinis granted him a charter and ordered its rebuilding. The houses show a very homogeneous aesthetic and architectural taste.

Very close to Alegrete, we highlight, about 9 km from Arronches, the cave paintings Lapa dos Gaivões, near the village Esperança, one of the most notable sets of outdoor paintings in Portugal.
